Toni Morrison recently received a medal from President Obama. As I watched Obama fasten the medal behind the neck of Morrison, I could not help feeling that he was closing the door on an era that I was a part of. I will miss the time when writers aspired to write the big novel and we had to work our way through these large complex works. I have no choice but to accept that there will be no more Song of Solomon, or Invisible Man. Now everything is reduced to the smallest possible space. The challenge for us writers today is to include the maximum amount of power into the minimum amount of words. We will do this because at the end of the day writers must write. Those are my thoughts on the matter, what do you think?
