America is Ahab

So Ahab's purpose now fixedly gleamed down upon the constant midnight of the gloomy crew. It domineered above them so, that all their bodings, doubts, misgivings, fears, were fain to hide beneath their souls, and not sprout a single spear or leaf - Herman Melville's Moby Dick (chapter 130)

Melville tried to warn us not to go off following leaders into dangerous, self destructive journeys. We the people should always turn away from insane leadership no matter how legendary, like a Bush, or extraordinary like an Obama. Melville showed us that even when we are at the edge of the cliff it is not too late to turn back. We can go a different way and let fools plunge into the abyss. The United States would listen to Melville if it were literate, but we are not, so the masses will ride into their demise like Ahab and his crew.
