   It had been a year since Smyth left the church. He was teaching religious studies at Brooklyn Community College. Smyth would talk to Daniel often about Christianity real and practiced in the United States. He spoke to Tracy from time to time, so that Smyth was not surprised to hear from her. She left a message with a worried voice. Tracy did not understand yet that Smyth would jump whenever she asked if there were just the hint of distress in her.   He called Tracy on his way to the subway station after his last class of the day was over.
